Field Day in Serra do Salitre Highlights Water Monitoring and Climate Resilience Strategies in the Cerrado Mineiro
Initiative by Cerrado das Águas in partnership with FUNBIO offers hands-on training for rural producers focused on water management and regenerative agriculture
By Cerrado das Águas Consortium
The Cerrado das Águas Consortium, in partnership with FUNBIO, will host on April 30 the Field Day: Water Resource Monitoring – How to Monitor Water on Your Farm and Across the Territory, at Fazenda Paiolinho, owned by Edson Alves, in Serra do Salitre (MG), Brazil. The initiative is aimed at rural producers, partners, and members interested in deepening their understanding of water dynamics across the landscape and strengthening water resilience on their properties.
The main objective of the event is to demonstrate, in a practical way, the importance of monitoring both within and beyond farm boundaries, enabling participants to understand how water behaves within sub-watersheds. The approach connects theory and practice through simple monitoring techniques that support decision-making and sustainable production planning.
One of the highlights of the program will be a training session on water resource monitoring, led by Professor Marina Batalini from the Federal University of Itajubá (UNIFEI). The session will emphasize the importance of understanding water dynamics within sub-watersheds, contributing to the development of collective water management strategies and strengthening water security across the territory.
The program will also feature a talk by Murilo Bettarello, farmer, entrepreneur, and international advisor in regenerative agriculture, who will bring a strategic perspective on adopting regenerative practices within agricultural value chains.
Throughout the Field Day, participants will engage with both technical and practical content related to water infiltration in the soil and its influence on the water balance, the different Cerrado vegetation types and their role in maintaining water resources, as well as strategies focused on conserving water within productive systems. Practices such as soil conservation, restoration of Permanent Preservation Areas (APPs), recovery of riparian forests, and protection of springs will be addressed.
The program also reinforces the importance of regenerative agriculture as a pathway to address climate change challenges. Through the knowledge gained, producers will better understand how landscape connectivity and the adoption of sustainable practices directly contribute to the adaptation of their farms and the continuity of agricultural production in the Cerrado Mineiro.
The Field Day will run from 7:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., with breakfast and lunch provided to participants. This initiative is part of the Cerrado das Águas Consortium’s efforts to build more resilient, productive, and sustainable landscapes.
