CERRADO: THE CRADLE OF WATERS

Our area of operation is the Cerrado biome. Known as the Cradle of Waters, this biome is responsible for supplying three large underground aquifers: Bambuí, Urucuia, and Guarani, which feed large continental rivers and reservoirs in the states of São Paulo, Minas Gerais, Tocantins, Piauí, and Bahia, as well as the Federal District. The Cerrado biome is a global hotspot, meaning it is a highly threatened region that harbors great biodiversity and is therefore a priority area for conservation.

Within the Cerrado biome, our area of operation is the Cerrado Mineiro region, comprised of 55 municipalities and 4,500 producers who use highly mechanized agriculture. Within this region lies the municipality of Patrocínio, where we developed our Pitolo project in the Feio stream basin.

The expansion strategy is planned to take place in six other municipalities, which together are responsible for 70% of coffee production in the biome. By 2023, the PIPC will expand to: Serra do Salitre, Monte Carmelo, Rio Paranaíba, Carmo do Paranaíba, Araguari, and Coromandel. The goal is to create smart agriculture corridors and leverage biodiversity gains in the region as a whole.
