Smart irrigation: xFarm and CCA join forces in the Cerrado

In Brazil, xFarm Technologies partners with the Cerrado das Águas Consortium: efficient and sustainable irrigation for coffee cultivation in one of the planet's most precious biomes.

xFarm Technologies has partnered with the Cerrado das Águas Consortium (CCA) with the goal of expanding the impact of the Cerrado das Águas project, involving new producers and introducing advanced digital tools for irrigation management. The partnership was formed thanks to the positive results obtained in a joint pilot project that allowed a group of producers to use a sustainable irrigation solution developed specifically for Coffea arabica L. plantations, within the framework of a multi-year project by the Giuseppe and Pericle Lavazza Foundation and xFarm Technologies.

September 23, 2025 – Promoting sustainable agricultural practices to contribute to the resilience of agricultural production and increasingly efficient irrigation in a strategic region of Brazil for biodiversity, water availability in much of the country, and coffee cultivation, one of the main agricultural commodities. This is the objective of xFarm Technologies, a Swiss technology company specializing in the digitalization of agriculture and with a growing presence in South America, joining the Cerrado das Águas Consortium (CCA), a collaborative platform formed by companies whose objective is to guarantee water for the continuity of coffee production and communities in the Cerrado, developing strategies to combat the effects of climate change.

The collaboration between the two entities began two years ago with an experiment that generated very positive results and laid the foundation for the partnership now established. The area of operation is the same as where the CCA operates, in the Cerrado Mineiro region. Located within the Cerrado biome, this region is known for cultivating a very high-quality variety of Coffea arabica L., protected by the Designation of Origin of the Cerrado Mineiro Region.

“It is with great satisfaction that we welcome another partnership. xFarm Technologies, an innovative company whose principles and values align with the Cerrado Water Consortium, is joining forces to strengthen its purpose: guaranteeing water for tomorrow and today for producers and the community. This partnership is very relevant and important because, while the CCA works to increase water availability for all, it also works to raise awareness about the need for water conservation. Therefore, xFarm Technologies' tools are excellent for assisting the CCA and producers on this path. With more efficient irrigation systems, less water is invested in coffee production, optimizing the production process, which can lead to increased producer income, generating social, environmental, and agronomic gains. In a partnership that unites knowledge and innovation, having xFarm Technologies, a Swiss technology company, joining a recovery and preservation initiative in the Cerrado biome demonstrates the strength of collaboration to guarantee the region's water security,” assesses the president of the CCA, Marcelo. Urtado.

Through its Conscious Producer Investment Program (PIPC), CCA offers producers assistance in sustainable agricultural practices and a range of benefits, including the possibility of participating in specific projects. One of these projects is the sustainable irrigation project that xFarm Technologies has been developing in Brazil for several years, in collaboration with the Giuseppe and Pericle Lavazza Foundation, created to promote and implement economic, social, and environmental sustainability programs for the benefit of coffee-producing communities worldwide. Currently, approximately 15 PIPC producers, totaling 334.8 hectares, participate in the joint project, based on a predictive model developed specifically for the irrigation of Coffea arabica L. plantations.

“Within the scope of the project, the Giuseppe and Pericle Lavazza Foundation supports producers in acquiring our equipment and digital solutions to make irrigation more efficient and, therefore, more sustainable from an environmental and economic point of view. The results we have obtained are very positive and confirm that digitalization and the use of advanced technologies can be decisive in making agriculture more sustainable from an economic and environmental perspective, transforming it into an agent in the fight against climate change,” says Giacomo Luddeni, Head of Sales Execution at xFarm Technologies.

During the first two years of collaboration between CCA, xFarm Technologies, and the Lavazza Foundation within the PIPC project, several weather stations were also installed on the properties of the participating producers. This created a monitoring network that allows the Consortium to track rainfall and long-term climate trends, identifying and evaluating potential changes. Furthermore, PIPC producers actively participated in the research and development program that enabled the improvement of irrigation models specifically designed for coffee cultivation in Brazil. They were the first to test the latest update to xFarm Technologies' Irrigation module, which will allow for sensorless irrigation based on satellite data, eliminating the need for physical devices. This update makes the system more scalable in Brazil, making intelligent irrigation management tools accessible to an increasing number of coffee producers.

Cerrado Water Consortium

The Cerrado Water Consortium is a collaborative platform that includes various sectors, such as companies, government, and civil society. The CCA is an initiative of the coffee production chain that seeks to build water resilience in the Cerrado Mineiro region through strategies that promote better land use, ensuring the continuity of coffee production in the region and mitigating the impact of climate change.

Through the Conscious Producer Investment Program (PIPC), the CCA team guides, supports, and encourages producers in implementing strategies for the provision of ecosystem services, focusing on improving the supply of water resources to all producers whose properties are adjacent to a given basin, making the region resilient to climate change. As a result, the CCA has 202 hectares of conserved native vegetation, 4,000 hectares of agricultural land in transition to regenerative agriculture, and benefits 150,000 people.

The initiative has the following companies as associate members: Nescafé, Expocaccer, Nespresso, Lavazza, Cooxupé, Cofco International, Volcafe, NKG Stockler, Daterra, Federação dos Cafeicultores do Cerrado, CerVivo, Starbucks Farmer Support Center, JDE Peet's, EISA, and X-Farm. In addition, the platform has key partners such as the Municipal Governments of Serra do Salitre and Coromandel.
